Why do we follow our own rhythm?

Speed hiking is a more athletic form of hiking. Such hikes involve a rapid trek across challenging terrain using poles and light equipment. The poles help hikers to stabilise their bodies and to provide a workout for their upper-body muscles. Like Nordic walking, speed hiking is fast-paced. It can also include alternating periods of running and walking.

Why do we prefer to explore an area on foot?

A stroll is a relaxed outdoor walk. You can take a stroll in many different places: in the woods, in a park or in the city. Strolls are usually a form of relaxation. People take strolls to enjoy the sun, get some fresh air, to exercise or to simply experience a change of scenery. A walking cane frequently helps older people to take a stroll.

Why do we spend our holidays in a sleeping bag?

Your backpack is ready, and your hiking boots are tied. Your multi-day hike can begin. Such a hike is considered to be a tour that lasts for more than 24 hours. Hikers will generally sleep under the stars, in a shelter like a hut or in a tent.

Why do we have to take the high road?

High-altitude tours belong to the Olympian class of mountaineering. During tours like these, mountaineers set off from the valley, take hiking paths, cross rock-covered terrain and trek through snow before reaching steep ice and firn flanks. High-altitude tours call for orientation skills, experience, climbing ability and sure footing cross alpine terrain. The right equipment is an absolute must for such tours. During high-altitude tours, mountaineers are part of a roped party or group and face all sorts of different terrains. They have to find their own way on snow, ice and rock.

    2020_lowa_arthur-kudelka

“A high-altitude tour combines a range of different skills and really puts the whole alpinist to the test. To succeed on these tours, you have to be able to handle everything nature throws at you: ice, snow and rock. That’s why it is so alluring.”

Why do we look up and not down?

Via ferrata are iron routes built on mountains. The route is usually well marked with a permanently installed steel cable. It’s a source of great adventure. Fixed steel pegs and ladders are used in places that are too steep or rock faces that lacks sufficient structure. In addition to normal via ferrata equipment, climbers need the right footwear.

    johannes-krause_8736

“Taking on a via ferrata for the very first time was a completely new, amazing and great experience for me. When it comes to the equipment you need, you realise pretty quickly just how important the right footwear is.”

Johannes | LOWA Key account manager Germany

    • Generalist
As a rule of thumb, a good via ferrata boot is a generalist. After all, the route covers not just steps carved into rock and ladders, but also classic mountain trails, meadows and hiking paths.

    • Torsional stability
Climbers who are taking long tours or have to cover difficult passages need secure footing. This is why via ferrata boots offer exceptional torsional stability and give wearers firm footing even when they are carrying a full load.

Why don’t we stay at home?

Snow-covered trees and a white winter landscape – these are more than good reasons to head outdoors. A winter hike is a one-day tour done in icy or snowy conditions on easy trails. The tour can lead over either mountainous or flat terrain. Winter hikers generally use trails that have been cleared. The snow on them will be no deeper than ankle-high, so hikers don’t need snowshoes or mini-crampons to complete their tours.

    matthias-wanner_vertriebsleiter-international-lowa

“Winter hikes are something very special. You rarely run into anyone, and the natural sights you see are simply amazing. When I think about the footwear I need, comfort is naturally a priority. But the height of the upper and the lining material are also very important. When I set off on a hike through the snow, I’ll need a higher upper with an insulating lining. But if I’ll just be hiking through the woods, all I need is a normal MID-CUT boot with a waterproof GORE-TEX membrane.”

Why do we dare travel to the far corners of the world?

Remote areas and uncharted terrain: Expeditions are trips of discovery and research that take people to remote or unexplored regions of the world. In the Alps, such expeditions frequently involve mountain climbing on heavily glaciated terrain that is difficult to manoeuvre across. But expeditions on flat terrain also appeal to many adventurers. These types of journeys usually pass through areas that are far from civilisation and, as a result, lack such infrastructure as roads, hospitals and accommodations.

    2020_lowa_arthur-kudelka

“Expeditions are the Olympics of mountaineering. When you set off on one of them, you’ll have to do something more than simply tackle the challenges of scaling mountains or climbing. You’ll also have to come to terms with different cultures and people. This is what I like so much about expeditions.”

Why do we prefer to explore the city on foot?

A trip to the office or a few quick errands in the downtown pedestrian zone – many people live their lives in urban settings. The activities performed in a city can be multi-faceted. The range is broad: from work in the office, shopping trips or a sightseeing tour of a city at the weekend.

The bags are packed, and the entire family can now take off. Their destinations can vary greatly: a joint activity in nature, a visit to a place of interest or a trip to an attraction. • What fascinates you?

Ice climbing involves the scaling of ice formations like frozen waterfalls and icicles. Climbers use crampons and ice tools to scale the ice. Ice climbing is a special discipline of alpine climbing or mountaineering because all knowledge about alpine climbing is put to the test here. The same protective equipment needed for alpine climbing is used here as well. Mixed climbing is a combination of sport climbing and ice climbing. It may sound simple. But the ability to effectively move across such combined terrain is far from easy. Generally, climbers use crampons and ice tools to maintain their vertical position – just like ice climbing. Mixed routes are characterised by pronounced overhangs and difficult rock and ice formations.

Why should we head out into the ice and snow?

Mountains can still be explored on foot even in snowy and frosty conditions. The range of winter mountaineering experiences extends from easy hikes on snow-covered forest roads and flat alpine meadows to summit tours and real high-altitude excursions where the technical challenge grows.

A long-distance hike usually leads through a variety of different regions and can be completed only during daily stages. Why don’t we take the gondola?

A mountain hike involves a tour in highland terrain. This is the easiest way to explore the mountains. In principle, mountain hiking is something for everyone. The tours frequently use forest trails or paths. The higher the altitude of the hikes, the greater the degree of difficulty and the greater the need for experience, preparation, fitness, grip and a head for heights. Mountain hiking is a basic form of mountain climbing. The transition is frequently seamless.

Why is the journey the reward?

Fascinating climbing faces or challenging via ferrata – before you can start your adventure, you have to gain a little altitude. The hike to the starting point of the rock face or the climb is called the approach. The approach usually leads across rough terrain and frequently includes some sections to scramble as well.

“I regard the approach as well as the tour and the actual climbing as part of the same experience. You wake up and warm up.”

Josef Pfnür | LOWA ACTIVE Team

    • Climbing zone
A few rocky passages have to be cleared on the way to the rock face or the via ferrata. The sole of approach boots is equipped with a climbing zone for this purpose. The zone facilitates easier movement during small scrambling sections.

    • Generalist
Approach routes often vary significantly. For the boot to perfectly meet every challenge, it should be designed with a broad range of uses in mind.

    • Sole rigidity
You need to have stable footing when you venture across rough terrain. The soles of your boots need to have a certain degree of stiffness to perform this job.

Why don’t we find our answers within ourselves?

Pilgrims take a journey to a holy or spiritual place. The pilgrim takes a journey that lasts for several days or even weeks – usually on foot. Pilgrimages are a part of many religions. Today, belief in God does not have to be the primary reason for the pilgrimage. The reasons can vary greatly. Many pilgrims want to forget about their everyday lives, make a key decision or get to know themselves. No matter what reason may prompt an individual to undertake a pilgrim hike, it is not the destination that matters most. It is the experience-filled journey that counts for the pilgrim.
