1. hiking on the Dutch Mountain Trail on weekdays
The Dutch Mountain Trail has gained great popularity since its creation in 2020. It is an initiative of the Dutch Mountain Film Festival (DMFF), which takes place every year in Heerlen. Although many hikers climb the 7 peaks every year, it is also possible to explore the South Limburg landscape without encountering many other hikers. As the area is also popular with day hikers and most long-distance hikers are out and about at weekends, it is best to avoid these days. If you hike during the week, for example from Monday to Thursday, you will have the trails to yourself and will only meet a handful of other hikers.
2. Pack light and only the essentials
An open door, of course, and a reminder. After all, the trail is not considered the toughest long-distance hiking trail in the Netherlands for nothing. You walk around 25 kilometres per stage and climb a few hundred metres in altitude every day. Pack as little as possible so that you can enjoy as much as possible without a heavy rucksack. We have compiled a comprehensive packing list for long-distance hikes. Choose only what you really need on this route. Fortunately, you don't need to take much with you, as the trail always passes a village where you can buy food and fill up on water. A good mackintosh, sturdy shoes and a comfortable rucksack are of course a must. I also enjoyed walking with poles. Especially when it has rained a bit, the path can get a bit muddy and high shoes help.
