5 TIPS FOR HIKING THE DUTCH MOUNTAIN TRAIL

LOWA x Thru-Hiking.com

No plans for this summer yet? We've got you covered! Because in our own country you can hike 100 kilometres on the Dutch Mountain Trail. Together with our LOWA ambassador Elmar from thru-hiking, we give you 5 tips for hiking on the Dutch Mountain Trail!

This relatively new hiking trail has gained unprecedented popularity in recent years and is perhaps the toughest long-distance hike in the Netherlands. The Dutch Mountain Trail runs from Eyselbergen to Maastricht via the 7 peaks of South Limburg. You hike the entire route in about 4 to 5 days and spend the night in a tent or more comfortable accommodation along the way. Last autumn, I set off on a journey of discovery and give you five tips for hiking the Dutch Mountain Trail.

1. hiking on the Dutch Mountain Trail on weekdays

The Dutch Mountain Trail has gained great popularity since its creation in 2020. It is an initiative of the Dutch Mountain Film Festival (DMFF), which takes place every year in Heerlen. Although many hikers climb the 7 peaks every year, it is also possible to explore the South Limburg landscape without encountering many other hikers. As the area is also popular with day hikers and most long-distance hikers are out and about at weekends, it is best to avoid these days. If you hike during the week, for example from Monday to Thursday, you will have the trails to yourself and will only meet a handful of other hikers.

2. Pack light and only the essentials

An open door, of course, and a reminder. After all, the trail is not considered the toughest long-distance hiking trail in the Netherlands for nothing. You walk around 25 kilometres per stage and climb a few hundred metres in altitude every day. Pack as little as possible so that you can enjoy as much as possible without a heavy rucksack. We have compiled a comprehensive packing list for long-distance hikes. Choose only what you really need on this route. Fortunately, you don't need to take much with you, as the trail always passes a village where you can buy food and fill up on water. A good mackintosh, sturdy shoes and a comfortable rucksack are of course a must. I also enjoyed walking with poles. Especially when it has rained a bit, the path can get a bit muddy and high shoes help.

3. Book your pitch or accommodation in advance

There is not much accommodation along the route. So book well in advance to make sure you have a place to sleep. If you stay in a hotel or guesthouse, there are a few more options, but if you bring a tent and sleep on campsites along the route, there are a few fewer options. We list our recommendations for each stage:

Stage 1: Eygelshoven station - Vaals

Overnight tip: Camping de Gastmolen

Stage 2: Vaals - Gulpen

Overnight tip: Camping Gulpenberg

Stage 3: Gulpen - Mheer

Overnight tip: Camping De Grensheuvel

Stage 4: Mheer - Maastricht railway station

4.Download a navigation app

The Dutch Mountain Trail is not very well marked along the way. That's why it's handy to buy the hiking guide and download a hiking app so you don't have to walk any extra kilometres. I used the Komoot navigation app and it worked like a charm. You can find the route here: Komoot Dutch Mountain Trail. The downside is that you need a Pro account for this app if you want to navigate offline. You can navigate offline for free with the Hiiker hiking app. However, you must first upload the GPX file of the trail. The hiking guide, published by the founders of the trail, gives you more background information about the paths and the history along the way. Enjoy reading it!

5. Take it easy!

Although the Dutch Mountain Trail is one of the toughest long-distance hikes in the Netherlands, you can take your time to enjoy the beautiful landscape of South Limburg. The stages are around 25 kilometres long, which will take you around 6 to 7 hours. So you have plenty of time to enjoy the beautiful viewpoint or one of the 7 peaks along the route. Take some good food and drink with you and chat with other hikers you meet.

Happy trails!
