Will you be joining LOWA in the search for altimeters in the lowlands? Then you should definitely not miss out on this tour. Because you will be hiking to the highest point in the Netherlands, the Vaalserberg. The Vaalserberg, which is 322.5 metres above sea level, is also home to the Drielandenpunt, where the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany border each other.
Even though the Drielandenpunt is a tourist highlight and often very busy, the surroundings of the Vaalserberg are beautiful. The soft forest floor is dotted with tall conifers and large bracken ferns.
That is why we deliberately do not start and end this walk in Vaals, but in the small village of Holset. You can get there by bus or take the car and park it at the starting point of the route. The end of the walk in Holset is also highly recommended. The small hamlet has a cosy square with lovely terraces.
But before we think about the end of the hike, we still have a twenty kilometre hike ahead of us. You first pass the Vaalsbroeck estate and castle, which is now a hotel.
You continue on your way and we take an unusual route to the highest point, via Germany and Belgium. When you're at a three-country point, you have to take advantage of it, right?
You descend through the forest and continue to follow the course of the border between the Netherlands and Belgium. As you gradually turn more to the north, you come to Meelenbroek. There you have a beautiful view of the hilly surroundings. Finally, you stop off at Boscafé 't Hijgend Hert, the "only mountain hut in the Netherlands". There is no better way to round off this hike to the highest point!
