A cult shoe that made history

A cult shoe that made history

AN ICONIC SHOE THAT MADE HISTORY.

A hiking boot that is now a true outdoor icon. However, the path it took to get there was anything but easy. In the beginning, the idea was merely ridiculed and dismissed as "unsellable".

A look back in time explains why this was the case.

1997 - the year in which Tony Blair was appointed Prime Minister, the film Titanic flickered across cinema screens and the world mourned the death of Lady Diana.

At that time, people were travelling in the mountains in sturdy mountain boots, which were either made with double-stitched or glued-toe construction. What was missing were shoes that were also suitable for shorter excursions and day trips. They should therefore not be too heavy, but still be stable.

  • "With the previous adhesive-tweaked design, it was not possible to reduce the weight."

    - Werner Riethmann | LOWA Managing Director

LOWA Managing Director Werner Riethmann therefore worked on an idea together with his development team. Why not simply inject the sole directly instead of gluing it on? A technology that has already been used in the leisure shoe segment. But does this also work for hiking boots?

The LOWA development team simply tried it out - and it worked. The first RENEGADE was launched on the market in 1997.

The shoe established an entire category: the All Terrain Collection, or ATC for short.

The category and the shoe were completely new and absolutely non-conformist for the time. The visual language and marketing were therefore also completely new.

This sentence from the catalogue describes the intention behind the development of the ATC category very well. From then on, outdoor activities should no longer only take place in the mountains with long-planned tours. Outdoor should start right on the doorstep - with small adventures and excursions.

The RENEGADE thus laid the foundation for an entire outdoor shoe category. Multifunctional shoes have become indispensable today and now make up the majority of LOWA's entire product range.

The advantages are obvious: multifunctional shoes are versatile and can be used for numerous activities. Whether for a beautiful day hike in the foothills of the Alps or a trip into the forest with the dog - these lightweight all-rounders offer the best comfort, whatever the activity. They are characterised above all by their lighter weight.

To ensure that the RENEGADE does not lose stability despite the direct injection moulded design, LOWA has developed a very special sole construction: the LOWA MONOWRAP®.

This is a raised frame that connects the sole to the upper and gives it stability thanks to its skeletal arrangement. The foot is thus firmly anchored in the sole. As a result, the special construction offers optimum support and plenty of comfort.

LOWA has continued to develop the LOWA MONOWRAP®. The LOWA developers also worked on numerous other areas, such as reducing the number of seams. The RENEGADE has thus been constantly optimised and improved - but LOWA has always retained its original comfort and look.
