Break in hiking boots

Spring is just around the corner - the hiking and outdoor season is starting. High time for a hike. The new shoes are ready. Slip them on straight away and start walking? But wait, wasn't there something? That's right, breaking in your shoes!

We asked our experts and here are our best tips on how to break in your hiking boots properly to avoid blisters and pressure points. From choosing the right socks to the best lacing techniques - we've put together all the tips and tricks for you. Get ready for your hiking season.

1. Choosing the right socks

It's important to wear the right socks when buying shoes. When trying them on, also wear the socks you will be wearing when hiking. This helps to test the fit of the shoes properly.
Are you still looking for the right socks for your mountain adventure? We have the right sock for you that should be in every drawer.

2. Try on shoes

Try out different shoes at a specialist retailer to quickly get a feel for which one fits well. Try your favourite for a long time and extensively in the shop before you buy it.

  • 3. Run-in

Before you go out for the first time, try the shoe on at home. This way you can exchange them again if necessary. Then start with short walks to get used to the feeling. This will also help you to slowly adapt the shoes to your feet. Wear the shoe on different terrain.

  • 4. Increase the intensity

You can now slowly start to adjust the duration and intensity of your walks. Start with short walks - it shouldn't be a crossing of the Alps. Start with flat terrain and build up to different terrain.

5. Lace up the shoes

Try different lacing techniques to find the best fit for you.

6. Pay attention to problem areas

Is your foot rubbing or pinching? As soon as you notice blisters or pressure points, use blister plasters, pads or special creams to protect these areas.

7. Patience, patience, patience

It can take time to break in your hiking boots properly. Give your feet the time they need to adapt.
Didyou know? The shoe, or rather the leather and padding, adapts to the foot through perspiration and the warmth of the foot.

The shoe still doesn't fit properly despite breaking it in and following our tips?

  • Try different thin or thick socks. Don't wear cotton or woollen socks (except merino).
  • You can use insoles to adjust the volume in the shoe if the shoe is a little too big.
  • In the case of individual pressure points or a shoe that is too small, we have the option of adjusting it or widening it slightly.
