High up in the Arctic
In mid-February 2018, LOWA-PRO team athlete Ines Papert, photographer Thomas Senf and athlete Anna Pfaff set off to explore the island of Senja (Norway) by climbing. However, the planned tours remained largely unfinished.
"Sometimes you have to accept things as they are."

This time, luck was not with the athletes. Anna Pfaff had to give up after just one day due to frostbite and travelled home early, while Thomas Senf caught the flu, meaning that his trip also turned out differently than planned.
"As successful as our trip had started, it was over just as quickly for Anna due to her frostbite. What a shame, as the conditions were perfect and all the new climbing routes were just waiting for us."
- Ines Papert | LOWA PRO Team
After Anna's journey home, Ines teamed up with her long-time friend Rahel Schelb from Switzerland. They climbed the classic "Finnkona" WI 6 and the day after Rahel's grandmother passed away, they opened a new route just behind Senjalodge, her home, as a memorial.
The first pitch seemed very difficult to belay, but as soon as the opportunity presented itself, Ines took it. Knowing how best to climb such thin ice, she moved forward as slowly and safely as possible. Every additional metre promised thicker and better ice. After seven pitches, the two reached the summit of the Fjølhaugen ridge, 765 metres above Melfjörd-vaer.
"We named the route "Rosalinde" after Rahel's grandmother."
- Ines Papert | LOWA PRO Team
The route is a total of 350 metres long and on the north-eastern side of Fjølhaugen (WI 7, M6). Host Bent Eilertsen had found out that only one rope team had attempted the route so far, but had to give up after a few metres. So now there is a new route on this fantastic island. Unfortunately, this was Ines Papert's last route during her trip, as she was slowly running out of climbing partners. She hopes to be able to climb more with Anna next time and thanks Rahel for stepping in so quickly.
