Alp Sellamatt, situated at around 1500 metres, has no need for superlatives - the Alpstein to the north and the seven Churfirsten peaks with their iconic silhouette to the south offer plenty of visual highlights. The striking peaks of Chäserrugg (2260 m), Hinderrugg (2306 m), Schibenstoll (2234 m) Zuestoll (2234 m), Brisi (2277 m), Frümsel (2266 m) and Selun (2204 m) are always firmly in view if you fasten your snowshoes to your feet at the Selamatt lift station www.chaeserrugg.ch. The Sellamatt-Zinggen Trail leads in a large loop across Alp Sellamatt - an extensive high plateau that lies halfway up the Churfirsten between the valley and the summit. When the winter snow cover has settled over the lovely landscape, the peace and quiet up here is marvellous. The soundscape is provided only by the wind blowing through the old spruce trees, the cawing of the nutcrackers squabbling over the seeds of the pine cones and the distinctive whistling of the alpine choughs as they forage for food at lower altitudes in the height of winter. And who knows - with a bit of luck, you might even hear the "choge schöne" sounds of a nature yodeller in this Toggenburg soundscape, as our video shows.
