LOWA hiking boot abbreviations

When browsing through the LOWA range, you will come across numerous abbreviations in the model names. But what do terms such as GTX, MID or Ws actually mean? In our glossary you will find all the important LOWA abbreviations relating to hiking boots - explained in a comprehensible way and with examples. So you're guaranteed to find the right shoe for your next tour!
    • GTX - GORE-TEX

"GTX" stands for the tried-and-tested GORE-TEX membrane. LOWA shoes with a GORE-TEX membrane are permanently waterproof, windproof and breathable. The membrane prevents water from penetrating, but allows water vapour to escape from the inside - for a dry, comfortable foot climate at all times.

      Examples:

      LADY LIGHT GTX

    • LL - Leather lining

"LL" means that the inner lining of the shoe is made from soft, supple leather. It ensures a pleasant foot climate and adapts perfectly to your foot over time.

      Example:

    • Ws - ladies' model ("women's")

"Ws" characterises models that have been specially developed for women. They are optimised for the female foot shape and therefore offer the best possible comfort for women.

      Example:

If it is already clear from the product name that it is a women's model, the suffix is omitted. Examples: LADY LIGHT GTX, LADY LIGHT LL.

Models with unisex lasts also do without the suffix "Ws".

    • MID - medium-high shaft ("mid-cut")

"MID" describes a mid-height upper that reaches above the ankle. This provides plenty of support, minimises twisting, prevents premature fatigue and keeps out the elements.

      Example:

    • LO - flat/low-cut upper or low-cut shoe

"LO" stands for a flat or low shaft, similar to classic low shoes. They offer great freedom of movement, lots of flexibility and are perfect for easy hikes, walks and everyday wear.

      Example:

    • HI - high shank ("high-cut")

HI refers to a particularly high shaft that offers a lot of stability and protection on demanding tours or in alpine terrain.

      Beispiel:

    • QC - quarter-cut shank

QC describes a shaft that lies between LO and MID - i.e. slightly higher than a low shoe, but lower than a classic mid-cut.

      Beispiel:

    • W - wide last ("wide")

"W" characterises models with a wider fit. They offer more space in the forefoot area and are ideal for wide feet.

      Example:

    • S - narrow last

"S" stands for a narrow fit, especially for narrower feet.

      Example:

    • SL - quick lacing ("speed lacing")

"SL" means that the shoe is equipped with a quick fastening system. This allows you to lace up your shoes quickly and evenly.

      Example:

There are also various children's models where the suffix is omitted from the product name, for example: ZIRROX II GTX LO JR

    • JR - children's model ("junior")

"JR" characterises LOWA shoes that have been specially developed for growing children's feet.

      Example:

    • TF - Occupational shoes ("task force")
"TF" stands for LOWA models that have certain certifications for professional use as PPE (personal protective equipment).

As you can see, many LOWA models are available in different versions - look out for the abbreviations in the name when buying and find the shoe that suits you perfectly. Use our filter function in the online shop and discover our wide range of models for every purpose.
