Why do we dare travel to the far corners of the world?

Remote areas and uncharted terrain: Expeditions are trips of discovery and research that take people to remote or unexplored regions of the world. In the Alps, such expeditions frequently involve mountain climbing on heavily glaciated terrain that is difficult to manoeuvre across. But expeditions on flat terrain also appeal to many adventurers. These types of journeys usually pass through areas that are far from civilisation and, as a result, lack such infrastructure as roads, hospitals and accommodations.

    • Insulation
LOWA’s expedition boots are outfitted with insulation made of GORE-TEX or PrimaLoft®.

    • Crampon welts
The boots are also equipped with crampon welts to help wearers to traverse icy surfaces or rough terrain.

    • Gaiters
To enable wearers to effectively plough through deep snow, the boots are equipped with gaiters.

Why should we head out into the ice and snow?

Mountains can still be explored on foot even in snowy and frosty conditions. The range of winter mountaineering experiences extends from easy hikes on snow-covered forest roads and flat alpine meadows to summit tours and real high-altitude excursions where the technical challenge grows.

    • Good grip
When people venture out into the cold or cover slippery and wet surfaces, it’s particularly vital the sole offers good grip. This is why LOWA winter boots have optimal traction to create good grip.

    • Sole rigidity
Anyone who is determined to climb high mountains in the winter will not get very far without crampons, snowshoes or mini-crampons. When such equipment is used, the soles of boots need to have a certain stiffness.

The Performance collection The development of a high-performance line

When LOWA sits down to develop its line of Alpine boots, the company consults with the best professional mountaineers in the German-speaking world. These ambitious mountain athletes know exactly what counts during extreme high-altitude tours, on via ferrata and during far-off expeditions. The LOWA PRO Team advises our specialists in the Development Department in its work to create footwear that perfectly meets the athletes’ needs. The result of this work is a new line that delivers top performance on the mountain. The models have become much more athletic and lighter. Over the past few years, a number of exceptional LOWA boots have been developed in the “performance” segment during countless meetings with athletes and testing events.

PrimaLoft® 400 Comfort for the cold time of year

The EXPEDITION 8000 EVO RD has no fear of extremely cold winter conditions thanks to its high-quality synthetic fibre insulation with a 400 g/m² lining. The insulating performance that is comparable to that of down, keeps the wearer’s feet pleasantly warm during winter conditions.

  • Optimal warming performance
PrimaLoft® insulation offers an optimal mix of warmth performance, weight and volume. Its heat-retention qualities are comparable to those of good goose down. The fibres are so thin and soft that they flexibly adjust to the body’s form.

  • Water repellent
PrimaLoft® insulation is water repellent. The material retains its form even when wet. During production, the ultra-fine micro-fibres gain their water-repellent properties in a special, fibre-based refining process. This special treatment prevents moisture from sticking to the fibres.

  • PrimaLoft® insulation is also extraordinarily comfortable. The very low fibre strength facilitates good heat retention. The fibres trap more air with the same volume level, but can also be tightly compressed. This creates a high level of wearing comfort as well as excellent fibre recovery and long form stability.

Corporate Responsibility Tradition and innovation since 1923

Corporate responsibility (CR) stands for far-sighted management in a company’s core business and has a high priority in the business’s overall strategy. CR is a key aspect of sustainable growth in the following areas of business activity: the market, jobs, the common good, the environment and supply chains. Social, environmental and commercial issues are given equal weight, and stakeholders are integrated into the strategic focus of the company’s CR activities.

Polyurethane (PU)

Polyurethane (PU) is a soft plastic that has very good cushioning properties and is usually used in the midsole as a result. Through the use of PU, the soles become lightweight and functionally flexible.

Aluminium foil

Aluminium foil is the name used to describe a thin foil that is produced in a rolling process using the raw material of aluminium. Air-tight aluminium foil is primarily used in insoles as a layer of insulation that fights off cold from below and retains heat in the shoe.

EVA

The acronym “EVA” stands for “ethylene-vinyl acetate”. It corresponds to an elastomeric polymer that is used to make plastic materials. The EVA material creates soft and flexible qualities. It is primarily used in the production of shoe and shoe midsoles to provide step cushioning. Various degrees of rigidity can be achieved on the basis of the thickness employed.

Approx. 25%
Polyester

Polyester is synthetic plastic fibre made from crude oil. In chemical terms, it is a polymer that can be processed into many different materials. Thanks to its chemical flexibility, polyester is lightweight, dries quickly, does not shrink and has the highest levels of tear and abrasion resistance.

Approx. 45%
Polyethylene

Polyethylene is a semi-crystalline and non-polar thermoplastic resin that is, by far, the most widely used plastic in the world. Polyethylene is used in part as a component of man-made fibre/blended fabrics. It is used primarily to create comfort and insulate the foot from below.
