The hike via the Stepbergalm to the Kramer barely scrapes the 2,000 metre mark. For fit mountaineers, this tour is one of the best hikes around Garmisch-Partenkirchen. If you are fit and sure-footed enough to master 1,200 metres in altitude, the Kramer is one of the best, moderate mountain tours in the Werdenfelser or even in the German Alps.
Tour tip: The ascent and descent require surefootedness, a head for heights and the best footwear. However, you can be rewarded with a refreshment stop at the Stepbergalm.
Ascent: The ascent starts outside Garmisch-Partenkirchen at the Almhütte car park. Right at the start, you hike up along paths, a meadow and through sparse pine forests on wonderful hiking trails. The view of the Zugspitze massif opposite tempts you to stop for a photo just above the valley floor. Further up in the direction of "gelbes Gwänd", the path becomes somewhat steeper and you reach the Kramerlaine gorge. You soon reach the meadow area of the Stepbergalm, from where the trail leads eastwards to the ridge of the Kramer. Initially through mountain pine forests until the vegetation becomes increasingly sparse and the entire Werdenfelser Land, including all the mountain ranges, becomes visible. The summit invites you to linger, as the view extends as far as Munich and even as far as the Central Alps.
Descent: The descent follows exactly the same route as the ascent, although there are several options. A stop at the Stepbergalm is highly recommended at this point. The beautiful descent variant described here, which follows the Kramer ridge, is a little longer but highly recommended. Over the summit cross, on the northern flank down to the right via the Kramersteig to the Kramerplateauweg. Keep right here to the starting point at the alpine hut.
