Lake Eibsee is a bathing lake, holiday resort, photo opportunity and much more. Its turquoise-green water is known up and down the country and is not only a popular photo motif, but also worth at least a day trip. That's why it's best to start with the Bayerische Zugspitzbahn in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, enjoy the wonderful journey via Hammersbach to Grainau and then hike across alpine pastures, meadows and forests without traffic and congestion to the aforementioned hotspot. You can spend a wonderful time at Lake Eibsee before walking back to Grainau or boarding the train to Garmisch-Partenkirchen at the Zugspitze railway station.
Tour tip: Especially early in the morning, wafts of mist make the lake look mystical and enchanted. Please note, however, that the Eibsee and the surrounding forests are not only popular recreational destinations for people, but also provide a refuge for a variety of native animals.
Ascent: From the Zugspitze railway station in Grainau, the route leads via Kirchbichl up to the Neuneralm plateau, just a few metres above Grainau. The mighty Waxensteine accompany the entire route in an impressive manner from above. The forest road then continues relatively flat until you reach the picturesque Eibsee lake. The walk around the lake is worthwhile, and not just if you want to find the perfect swimming spot.
Descent: Either take the cog railway back to Garmisch or take the footpath directly from the Eibsee down to Grainau.
