    • What does ‘drop’ mean in the context of a running shoe?

In running shoes, ‘heel-to-toe drop’ (or simply ‘drop’, from the English term) refers to the difference in height between the heel and the forefoot. Running shoes usually have a heel-to-toe drop of between 0 and 12 mm. The following classification generally applies:
      Zero heel-to-toe drop: 0 mm
      Low heel-to-toe drop: 1–5 mm
      Medium heel-to-toe drop: 6–10 mm
      High heel-to-toe drop: > 10 mm
The size of the drop and which one is suitable for a runner depends, apart from individual preferences, heavily on running ability and style.

    • What is the difference between road running shoes and trail running shoes?

The difference between road running shoes and trail running shoes lies primarily in their intended use, the sole and their construction. Road running shoes are characterised by a relatively smooth, low-tread outsole. They offer strong cushioning. They are also lightweight and made from breathable upper materials. Trail running shoes, on the other hand, have a heavily treaded – sometimes stud-like – outsole. Both the construction and the materials are sturdier and more robust to provide protection against roots and twisted ankles.

    • Can I also use the LOWA® SKYTERRA as a hiking boot?

In principle, you can also wear trail running shoes such as the LOWA® SKYTERRA for hiking. However, there are a few things to bear in mind. You should have sure-footedness and healthy ligaments and joints. If so, there’s no reason why you shouldn’t wear trail shoes on easy hikes along well-maintained mountain paths. Trail running shoes aren’t ideal if you frequently find yourself on steep, scree-covered terrain, or if you need a lot of ankle support. In such cases, this type of shoe won’t provide enough support or protection against sharp, pointed stones.

    • How much cushioning does a trail running shoe need?

The level of cushioning in a trail running shoe depends not only on individual preferences, but also on the intended use, the terrain and your running style. As a general rule, the more cushioning there is, the more comfortable the shoe is, but also the less stable. Stability, however, is essential when running on uneven ground. If you mainly run on (short) highly technical trails, you’re better off choosing a shoe with less cushioning. For trail runs on easier paths or ultra-distance races, you’ll want more cushioning. For everything in between, a trail running shoe like the SKYTERRA with medium cushioning is ideal.
