Manaslu - Mountain of souls

Nepal Hans Kammerlander - the name alone triggers an expression of deep respect among alpinists. in 1996, the exceptional alpinist and athlete in the LOWA PRO Team achieved the previously impossible and became world-famous: without the use of artificial oxygen, he conquered Mount Everest via the north side in the short time of 16 hours and 40 minutes - an achievement that has not been beaten to this day.

NEVER AGAIN MANASLU.

To make this success even more unimaginable, he followed up this speed ascent with the first solo ski descent of the world's highest mountain. But Hans Kammerlander's life is not only characterised by successes. During an expedition on Manaslu in 1991, Kammerlander lost two of his best friends and barely escaped with his own life. Since then, the mountain has been taboo for him. The fear of the memories and the old wounds is too great. For 26 long years, the resolution "Never again Manaslu" stuck - until autumn 2017.

"I want to try and finally finish the route there. I believe this is the only way I can close this sad chapter, which still affects me deeply today, in my own way and find peace."

He will be accompanied by an Austrian film team led by Werner Herzog and Gerald Salmina, who are making a documentary feature film about the life of the extreme mountaineer. Also taking part is Stefan Keck, an experienced high-altitude mountaineer and skier from Tyrol, who witnessed an avalanche accident on Manaslu in 2012 in which twelve people died. Both Kammerlander and Keck associate difficult memories with the "mountain of souls". All the more reason for both of them to now attempt to climb the mountain in order to ski down a new route at the end. Always at their side: the film team.

AN ADVENTURE IN FEATURE FILM FORMAT

In the film itself, Hans Kammerlander is the narrator. His story is told in two ways: Archive footage brings Kammerlander's life to life authentically, while actors at original locations emotionally retell the milestones of his career and the turning points of his life. A real back-breaking job for the actors, as this project demands everything of them: storms with wind speeds of up to 80 km/h, temperatures as low as -35 degrees Celsius, icefalls and crevasses. The audience should be able to empathise with what such a mountain demands of a person. They should be able to feel how unreal this area is and understand what it means to be in an extreme situation. The climax of the film is Kammerlander's return to Manaslu, the mountain of destiny.
