ALONE

ON A SOLO EXPEDITION IN GREENLAND

Greenland - In mid-July, LOWA-PRO team athlete Robert Jasper embarked on a very special adventure. He paddled his foldable sea kayak into the remote fjords of East Greenland. He was not accompanied.

He completed the expedition completely on his own and also opted for the "by fair means" style - a style in which he had to carry all the equipment himself. He had a total of 90 kilograms of luggage with him.

THE HARD ROAD TO BASE CAMP

Jasper took four weeks for the expedition. The first point of the expedition was to reach base camp. The wind and weather conditions in Greenland - even in July, the average temperature in the fjords is below 10 degrees Celsius - sapped Jasper's strength. He even had to cover some sections of the route several times due to the adverse conditions. After almost two weeks, he had made it: he set up his base camp at the foot of the Fox Jaw Cirque - a mountain range with bizarre granite peaks that resemble the teeth of a predator.

LONELINESS OR POLAR BEAR

Throughout the expedition, Robert Jasper wavered between two emotional states: the mentally challenging solitude and the frightening situation of encountering a polar bear. Nevertheless, the extreme athlete decided to take a closer look at the wall of the Molar Spire (second granite tooth).

"The uncertainty of a first ascent appeals to me. You don't know whether it's really possible to climb up there. It's a huge challenge!"

STONECIRCLE

Jasper reached the wall of the second Granitzahn via a snow couloir. In two days, he climbed a total of seven pitches and then descended to base camp again and again due to the uncertain weather. Although the weather did not improve on the third day, the professional athlete still wanted to make an attempt to reach the summit. Up to about 80 metres below the summit, things could not have gone better, but then the onset of rain made the rock slippery. Robert Jasper weighed up the risks and decided to continue climbing carefully. A mistake would have serious consequences on this solo expedition. The wet rock was accompanied by fog. But with all his experience and routine, Robert Jasper managed to reach the summit.

"The clouds broke and you could see the surrounding mountains and fjords - all alone, no one as far as the eye could see. It was like heaven, indescribably beautiful!"

The descent was made by abseiling down the route. After a total of 18 hours, Jasper reached his tent back at base camp.

After 30 days in the wilderness, a total of 100 kilometres on foot with a heavy pack, 1,000 metres on steep rock and over 100 kilometres at sea, Robert Jasper had come full circle: he arrived back at his starting point. The name of the route was thus decided: "Stonecircle".
