Josef Pfnür

Shoeless in Kyrgyzstan

LOWA ACTIVE TEAM

Josef "Steno" Pfnür does not necessarily describe himself as a sport climber, but the interests of the Berchtesgaden native are too varied for that. In addition to rock climbing, he loves to be out and about in the snow and on ice, for example ice climbing or ski touring. But he is also fascinated by travelling to faraway countries, especially the many different cultures to be discovered. Being outdoors has a special significance for him, "because," he says, "you forget about everyday life and get away from work in your mind.

  • Because it's a tough one. Josef works as a master metalworker in Oberjettenberg at WTD 52, the Bundeswehr's technical centre for protective and special technology. On the side, he is also trying to train as a German mountain and ski guide. The unusual thing about it? No-one in his family is particularly keen on mountains - but Josef's passion is all the greater.

Just how big was demonstrated on his trip to Madagascar, where he was able to realise two first ascents as part of the team, as well as on the final expedition of the DAV expedition squad to Kyrgyzstan, which was an experience for several reasons. It was not only the successful first ascent of two 5,000 metre peaks that challenged the team, but also the loss of two pieces of expedition luggage. For example, the expedition doctor came to the rescue right at the beginning by lending his shoes. "We tried to buy more equipment, but nobody in Kyrgyzstan wears size 46 shoes," Josef recalls.

The next destination has not yet been decided. Such decisions have to be carefully considered. Because as much fun as Josef Pfnür has on his expeditions, they will always remain a hobby for him.

Josef Pfnür,

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR HIGHLIGHT OF CLIMBING TO DATE?
"There have been several. It's always the short moments that count. In alpine climbing, one of my highlights was definitely Moonlight Butters in Zion National Park (5.12d 300m). Perfect rock, a brilliant line, beautiful surroundings and we were able to climb all the pitches onsight at the end of our holiday."

WHAT ARE YOUR SPORTING GOALS?
"To keep the joy and passion for the sport for as long as possible. Then I love travelling to different countries and experiencing new adventures."

IS THEREA MISSION FOR YOU?
"Just don't get stressed."
