INTO YOUR BOOTS, GET SET, GO: HIKING TIPS FOR WOMEN

In your boots, get set, go: women have always been drawn to the mountains in their free time. Hiking has become one of their favourite weekend activities. Relaxing, enjoying freedom and setting off on the next adventure - that's the motto for many outdoor women. LOWA has put together five tips and tricks to ensure that your next tour alone or with friends is a great outdoor experience.

YOUR MOBILE HOME WITH CARRIERS

What do I pack? What can I leave at home? Depending on the length and nature of your hiking tour, the amount and type of luggage you need will increase. However, a few simple tricks will help you to make the most of the rather limited storage space.

Basically, the lighter and more compact you pack, the better. Overall, the weight of the packed rucksack should not exceed 25 per cent of your body weight.

  • PACKING RULES

There is a rule of thumb to ensure that the weight is optimally distributed in the rucksack: heavy items (camera) should be close to the back, medium-weight items (clothing) at the top and light items (sleeping bag) in the bottom compartment. Things that you need frequently (mobile phone, wallet) should be placed in extra compartments at the top of the rucksack.

  • EXTRA TIP

Roll your T-shirts instead of folding them. This saves space and even prevents creases.

THE RIGHT SHOES MAKE ALL THE DIFFERENCE

Do your shoes pinch or are they too wide? When it comes to hiking equipment, pears are not always apples. When you look at the shoe shelf at a specialist retailer, one question mark after another often pops up in your mind. Which model is right for my foot? Are there special women's shoes? Are they different from men's shoes? The clear answer: yes! LOWA has always produced outdoor shoes for women that are specially adapted to the female foot anatomy. From the height to the last to the sole, numerous details ensure optimum comfort.

  • SOFT SHAFT END

The calf starts earlier in women than in men. This is why LOWA outdoor shoes for women are equipped with a special upper. This is softer and more flexible.

  • SPECIALLY PADDED TONGUE

To prevent pressure points, the tongue of women's shoes is padded with viscoelastic foam. When exposed to body heat, this adapts to the anatomical shape of the instep and shin. As a result, the tongue does not slip sideways and wearing comfort is significantly increased.

  • WOMEN'S SERVICES

To ensure an optimum fit, the last of women's models is specially adapted to the female anatomy. The last is largely responsible for ensuring that the shoe fits well. As women's feet have a smaller volume, the instep height and ball circumference, for example, are adjusted.

  • MIDSOLES AND INSOLES FOR WOMEN

When walking, women's joints and ligaments are subjected to greater strain than men's. That's why LOWA uses a more flexible midsole that provides good cushioning. In addition, an insole made of soft viscoelastic foam and soft upper material ensure a comfortable fit.

CONSCIOUSLY (UN)CONNECTED

The tour is planned, the rucksack is packed - adventure is calling. Whether alone or with a friend: hiking is a time for relaxation. It's often all too tempting to disappear "off the radar" for a while. Our tip just in case: If you want to get away from your smartphone and the like, simply switch it off or take it with you in flight mode. This saves battery and nerves and the device is quickly at hand again when needed.

TRAVELLING SAFELY - EVEN ALONE

Whether you're travelling with a friend or alone, safety should be at the top of your list. If you are travelling alone for the first time, it is a good idea to opt for an easier route if in doubt. So-called premium hiking trails are well frequented and, in addition to clear signposting, offer plenty of opportunities for planned and unplanned stops. Do you value peace and seclusion? No problem! Just let a friend know where you are travelling and arrange a time to "check in" when you reach your destination.

"HOLD ON, I HAVE TO PEE."

Unfortunately, it's not quite as easy for women as it is for men. Whether on a day trip or trekking route - toilets are often few and far between. Wet wipes and disinfectant wipes are recommended so that you don't have to compromise on hygiene despite the urgency of the situation. These are often available in small, handy packs. But be careful with used wipes: Their high density and the agents used on the wipes make them poorly biodegradable. Nature is a sensitive ecosystem. Therefore, the same applies here as in general: pack everything up again and leave nothing behind. Even better: endeavour to use environmentally friendly and resource-saving packaging when shopping.
